just about completed my goal of launching 3 ‘practice’ sites.

if anyone is interested i created a craigslist classifieds style site, a image hosting service, and a note taking tool using heavily on ajax.

more to come…..

also, greetings to all the overseas folks that are visiting my site!

some notes before i forget

May 27th, 2007

over the weekend i developed a small web application for image hosting. i was surprised to see how much i accomplished in 1 day. but before i get to that, i have to write some notes about some things that i learned so i wont forget.

1. when copying over a plugin directory, double check that the files are in there!

2. act_as_authenticated has files in the lib folder!

3. use http://blog.evanweaver.com/articles/2007/01/13/growing-up-your-acts_as_taggable for taggable work. acts_as_polymorphs kicks major butt and thanks to the author of the plugin! you can use the cloud feature found on the acts_as_taggable wiki, but just replace the popularity field in the find_popular function with count.

4. write down all the passwords to all the domain names you use!

5. when using the directions from the blog above for taggable functionality, be sure to require the tag extension.rb file in the environments.rb!

6. increment and save a field just by using variable.increment! :columntoupdate

7. keep your layouts, partials, and templates in good form

8. be consistent with your function names, and file names!

well, i got another toy, i mean business tool....ux280p sony vaio.

well the nokia n800 didnt last to long even

though i was quite excited about the new device.

I decided to sell becuase even though

the nokia n800 provided me with the basics,

it didnt provide me with some other major things.

I guess i didnt think to much before investing my money.

sometimes, when it comes to important things, settling for less

is sometimes not a wise decision.

cool snippet of code to replace empty spaces in rails.

May 23rd, 2007

@yourStringOfData.gsub(/\s+/, ’-’)

so simple. what did i use this for?

well i am using acts as sluggable in one of my applications and wanted to give the user a link to a post/note that they wrote so they can send it to their friends/family/etc…well basically since acts as sluggable uses your url + if + title, all i needed to do was get the title of whatever, and replace all spaces in the title with the line dash. hopefully this tidbit helps someone.

hmm, maybe i should create a top 10 tricks all new ror programmers should know.

for all your geocodeing needs, check out segment7

May 18th, 2007

the other day i was doing some more testing on my site and all of a sudden, my latitude and longitude lookups started failing for some odd reason. since the geocoding service I was using seemed a little ifffy, i decided to check out what google had to offer. came across this blog and all i can say is that its easy to use and i had absolutely no problemo using it. so i rewrote my function to much shorter code, and all is well. besides, since its a google service, you know its on point.

part 2 of the n800

May 14th, 2007

back to what i was saying…

purchasing a mobile device boiled down to a few factors for me.

1. price. im not making any money yet, and I still dont have a nice bed to sleep on, so id figured with the remaining tax refund, id treat my back.

2. extra mobility. i wanted something that I could pocket. i already have a mac book pro, so i also figured any away place from the home office, id just bring the laptop if i plan to do any programming.

3. battery life. i really would’nt want to spend +100 dollars on a battery so id have to pick the device with the longest battery life.

now out of all the portable devices, i think the nokia n800 is the perfect fit for me. its the cheapest(could be purchased for ~360), the size is just right to walk around with it in your pocket, and the battery life is probably the longest out of the ux, oqo, and q1 only because it can quickly go from sleep to awake and back to sleep again. actually i dont have first hand experience with other mobile devices except for the 6700 pda from verizon. man, that pda drains battery like no tomorrow.

even though i choose the n800 for now, if i had the money(whenever my sites start generating some profits), id be the next in line in buying the oqo 02+. =)

got me a new toy, the N800.

May 4th, 2007

so for the past few months, ive been debating on what mobile device to purchase so i can totally be connected online all the time(sounds depressing huh?).

since i am starting to launch sites now, i would like to be able to access my web sites, databases, and emails to make sure everything is fine 24/7. how unprofessional it is to see a rails error page because i need to restart mongrel, or i missed a test step and a user uncovers a hole in the code? i justify this purchase because id like to one day free myself from my 8hr cubicle job and daily 1-2 hour commute. therefore, i have the mentality to go brute force(learned this from highschool wrestling), in things i do.

some of the devices i considered,

-the samsung q1

-sony ux180p

-oqo 01+, or the 02

-nokia n800

the winner n800!

why? more to come later…
